We love crockpot dump cakes so much that we made a list of all of the Crock-Pot Dump Cake Recipes that we have shared on the blog! We just love how easy these are to make and how great they taste.
This is one of our most popular Crock Pot Recipes on the website! I can't believe we shared it over six years ago! The old pictures were not my favorite so we updated them so you can see just how delicious this recipe is!
We originally shared this recipe back in February 2014! Wow! I love it when a recipe stands the test of time.
We also love making Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake and Cherry Dump Cake in the crockpot.
Super easy Crock Pot Apple Dump Cake with Spice Cake Mix Recipe! This apple dessert recipe uses pie filling, cake mix, and a few other ingredients to make a delicious fall dessert slow cooker recipe!
This fall dessert recipe is so dang easy! I love that you can pop it in the crockpot last minute if you find out people are coming over to visit. Your house smells delicious and you have an amazing dessert to serve that was crazy easy to make.
I mean really the hardest part of this recipe is finding the dang can opener to open the cans of pie filling.
Our can opener always seems to hide when I need it....or I have too many kitchen tools...I am going to stick with the hiding can opener otherwise, I might have to part with a kitchen tool.

Ingredients needed
Cooking spray for the crockpot
We love serving this warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. I have heard of people sprinkling a bit of brown sugar over it to give it even more flavor.
You can top this cake with chopped pecans or walnuts if you want a bit of crunch on the top.
Equipment Needed
Slow Cooker - You will want to make sure the slow cooker is big enough for the apple pie filling to spread out and the cake mix to go over it. I would not use a small warming crockpot since you will end up with super thick filling and cake mix. Unless you like a denser cake.
How to make an Apple Spice Dump Cake in the Oven
If your crockpots are in use you can make this recipe in the oven.
You will need a 9 x 13-inch casserole dish.
Make sure to grease the bottom of the casserole dish before pouring in the apple pie filling.
Top with dry cake mix and melted butter.
Bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes. I would check the cake at 30 minutes and see how it looks. It really depends on your oven.

Hi! My husband absolutely loved this recipe! I did add a cup of chopped pecans, which upped the deliciousness by far. I also added a block of cream cheese. The edges were crispy, but the inside wasn’t completely firm due to the cream cheese, but it was great!! Definitely will be my “go to” dessert.

Sandra, Thanks for sharing! I love the addition of the Pecans. I may have to try it with the cream cheese. I bet it was super delish.

Will definitely fix this in my crock pot for home but would like to know if this same recipe can be done in the oven to take off to a pot luck dinner. If so , how long and what temperature to cook it? thanks

Would this work in the crockpot casserole cooker? Looking for recipes that will easily convert.
Reply
Tammilee
Hi Toni, I think it would convert ok. I haven't tried it in the casserole cooker. You may just want to watch it towards the end of the cooking time to make sure the edges are not too hot.

can i use a different cake as i have had a hard time finding a spice cake mix
Reply
Tammilee
You can use any cake mix that you like. I like trying it with yellow cake mix. You can also add in extra spice like cinnamon if you can't find the spice cake mix.

Elaine Morris
Carrot cake mix is a great substituteReply

i have had trouble finding spice cake mix is there any other cake you can use?

This looks delicious! I just got a Crock-Pot and have been collecting recipes to try. By the way, I had the same problem with waaaaaay too many kitchen gadgets. I didn't want to get rid of things that I use on occasion, but I needed a way to organize them. I stashed the few things I use all the time in a single drawer, and put all the rest in another drawer. That way I never have trouble finding the can opener or rubber spatula.

What do you use to grease the crockpot?
Reply
Tammilee
I tend to spray the sides with Pam cooking spray.

Fyi you can do this with practically any flavor of pie filling and vanilla, white or yellow cake mix. I have made it with canned sliced peaches where I thicken the juice with cornstarch, some nutmeg and cinnamon, a little butter and lemon juice (canned peaches are way cheaper than peach pie filling). That is really good but I have never thought of using spice cake...... what an awesome idea. I can't wait to try it.

I love being able to change up this recipe. I just did cherries and chocolate cake and it was amazing. I love the peaches with cinnamon. yum!

Is there a way to use organic apples instead of pie filling?Reply
Tammilee
Hi Lissie, you could mix up the apples with cinnamon and cook them on the stove top before placing them in the crock pot.

I made the cherry dump cake , but it turned out too doughie...what size crock did you use ?

Tammilee
I use a 5 quart crock pot for this recipe most of the time. When I use the small round one the cake mix gets a bit too thick

Has anyone tried mixing apple and blueberry pie filling? Thinking about trying it today.

Dear Tammilee,I am enjoying your recipes. I think there is an error in the one above. You have Apple Pie Filling in some parts and Cherry Pie filling in others. Just thought I would let you know, so you can fix it. I have made Apple dump cake before in the oven but not in the crockpot. I'm sure it wil be just as good. I will post it to facebook as soon as you get the pie filling thingie straightened out.
Thanks for the recipes.
