Spain's royal family gathered in the capital of Madrid on Wednesday to mark 10 years since King Felipe VI of Spain was proclaimed as monarch.

The sovereign was joined by his wife Queen Letizia of Spain and two daughters, Crown Princess Leonor of Spain, 18, and Infanta Sofia of Spain, 17.

The royal family kicked off celebrations by attending the solemn release of the royal guard at the Palacio de Oriente (the Royal Palace).

The King then delivered a speech to gathered royals and key Spanish figures.

His Majesty looked smart in a navy suit and purple tie that paired well with youngest daughter Infanta Sofia's outfit, while his wife and heir opted for more colourful ensembles.

Felipe ascended the Spanish throne at the stroke of midnight on June 19, 2014, following his father King Juan Carlos' abdication after a string of scandals.

The new monarch was formally sworn in and proclaimed king the next morning, after the symbolic passing of the Captain General's sash from Juan Carlos to his son, signifying the transfer of royal and military power to Felipe.

When he took the throne, he was the youngest monarch in all of Europe.

Felipe's wife Letizia became Queen of Spain when he was crowned and their eldest daughter, Princess Leonor, became heir apparent to the Spanish throne.

For the 10th anniversary of her husband's ascension, Letizia paired a €125 (approx. $201 AUD) Maksu sleeveless silk top and €185 (approx. $298 AUD) midi skirt in a stunning blue with a pair of £360 (approx. $686 AUD) gold sandals.

A fan of recycling fashion, the queen has worn all of these pieces before.

Daughter Leonor wore a Roberto Verino red crepe blazer which retails for €370 (approx. $595) and matching straight-legged pants that go for €180 (approx. $289) with a pair of simple taupe pumps.

Royal fans agreed the young princess was the spitting image of her mother in the ensemble, as Letizia herself is fond of brightly coloured suits for formal affairs.

Leonor accessorised with a pair of stunning 18 carat rose gold earrings studded with diamonds and rubies by the Gold & Roses.

If the €1,680 (approx. $2,700) jewels look familiar, it's because Queen Letizia has worn them several times before.

Clearly young Leonor has been raiding her mother's jewellery box as well as her wardrobe!

Leonor was supported by her younger sister Sofia during the proceedings, this sweet snap showing the 17-year-old adjusting her big sister's hair.

Infanta Sofia wore a surprisingly budget friendly jumpsuit from the brand Cardie, which usually retails for €179.90 (approx. $288), which she had worn before.

She paired the jumpsuit with a set of €115 (approx. $185) black ballet flats.

Though she is the daughters of Spain's King and Queen, Sofia does not hold the title of princess.

In Spain, only the heir to the crown - in this case, Sofia's older sister Leonor - is allowed to carry that title, which is why Sofia is styled as 'infanta', the title given to a daughter of the ruling monarch of Spain or Portugal who is not heir.

The sisters joined forces to cheekily interrupt the formal proceedings and take to the stage with a special message for their father.

"Sorry to interrupt, but we also have something to say today," Sofia said in Spanish, translated to English by media outlets.

"Thank you for joining us in remembering that in these 10 years, we have learnt from our parents what the commitment that the four of us have with all Spaniards means."

Leonor continued the toast, telling the small crowd: "Now I would like you to join us in a toast to our mother and father, to our Kings.

"Because since we were born, we have been taught the value of this institution, of the Crown, its usefulness to our society and its purpose of serving everyone."

King Felipe has been grooming his daughter to one day take his place as Spain's monarch since he first took the throne 10 years ago and he seemed impressed with her and Sofia's speech.

Felipe and Letizia were no doubt proud of their daughters for pulling off such a sweet surprise at the palace.

The couple, who married in Madrid in May 2004, shared a loving glance as they stood for the formalities - Letziai barely holding back a smile as her husband of 20 years beamed down at her.

After the solemn release of the royal guard, the royals met with Spaniards awarded the Order of the Civil Merit as part of the anniversary celebrations.

Established by King Alfonso XIII in 1926, the Order was created as a way to reward "civic virtues of public servants in the service of the State, along with extraordinary services of Spanish and foreign citizens to the benefit of the Nation".

The royal family then took to the palace balcony, where they waved to well-wishers crowded below.

King Felipe was spotted smiling proudly at Leonor as she greeted the public, clearly taking well to her role as future Queen of Spain.

Later in the day, the royals paid a visit to the Royal Collections Gallery for a more relaxed engagement.

King Felipe swapped his formal suit and tie for a more casual blue blazer which he wore over a pink shirt which was unbuttoned at the collar.

Queen Letizia looked effortlessly glamorous in a black sleeveless top, thick belt and champagne-coloured pleated skirt.

She sat with her daughters and a group of young Spaniards as they watched a presentation at the gallery, which is home to everything from paintings, sculptures, and tapestries, to luxury objects, carriages and other artworks and historical pieces.

Princess Leonor looked just as radiant as her mother in a matching grey embellished skirt and blouse, while sister Infanta Sofia opted for an all-white ensemble.

Both young royals wore their hair loose and kept their makeup minimal, embracing dewy complexions and pink glossy lips.
