The problem with this recipe is that it doesn't offer a proper ratio of ingredients. However, once the ratio has been solved for, this drink is a smash hit.

3 parts watermelon juice
2 parts gin
1 part basil simple syrup

I wanted to make a pitcher of this for a brunch. After reading the comments, I addressed the bland/too sweet objections by adding fresh strawberries, pureed and chunked, plus a couple limes, and leaned heavy on the ratio of Sapphire gin. This really punches up the flavor, but also overshadows the basil, so adjust accordingly (like x2-3). The pitcher was empty before the food was served, and it's already been requested for the next one, so cheers.

To me. Watermelon juice just can't stand up to liquor. It's too...well...watery.Here's an adjustment for a single serving I think works:3 oz watermelon juice3 oz Gin1/2oz lime juice (or half a lime)1/2 oz basil simple syrupShake with ice. Pour over ice in a rocks glass. Top with club soda (about 1oz) and smacked basil leaf.

Can anyone give me an idea of what a small bunch of basil translates to in terms of a cup or portion of a cup?

Sarah

Definitely needs either lemon or lime juice. With that addition, it's delicious!

Lisa

The alcohol was a bit strong for me and the watermelon juice did not have enough flavor to punch it up, so I combined other peoples’ suggestions for a super tasty version:1 part basil simple syrup 1 pert lime juice 3 parts gin3 parts watermelon juiceYum!

Agree with other notes, add lemon, pinch of salt, and skip the syrop. Muddled basil in place of the syrup. Otherwise sweet and bland.

Karen

Too sweet. Cut back simple syrup and add the juice of a lime.

Nina

a little too sweet; next time i'll halve the amount of sugar for the syrup and add lemon or lime juice

Jan

Pinch of salt and splash of lime juice:perfection

Tasty, love the basil syrup, very summery. Benefits from a little lemon.

Needs some tang

The ratios are not clear but I tried it with 2 oz. of gin, 2 oz. of simple syrup and 4 oz. of watermelon puree. It is not strong and could use some tang - next time I will probably cut back to 1.5 oz. of syrup, and add juice from a half of lime or a slice of ginger possibly.

I made this expecting it to mask the taste of the gin. It does not. The gin is incredibly potent. The co*cktail as a whole is bitter.

Beth

I thought for all of the preparation, it would be more flavorful. It was too sweet and bland, not a keeper!

About how many drinks does this recipe make?

Francine

Is this for ONE co*cktail? In other words, does each co*cktail require an entire watermelon?? Please advise.
